At the same time, my husband and I are raising our own two boys here, so I also get to experience these communities as a parent. My boys attend Twin Bridges Schools, and through my involvement with Kid Country Daycare, the Ruby Valley Healthcare Foundation, Twin Bridges Little League, Vigilante Little League, and substitute teaching at Twin Bridges Schools, I've come to appreciate these communities from more than just a real estate perspective.

People often ask me what it's like to raise kids here. The honest answer is that no community is perfect, and rural living comes with its own set of challenges. But what continues to stand out to me is how invested people are in one another. Something I've noticed while substitute teaching is how naturally older students look out for younger ones. Living and Raising a Family in Twin Bridges, Montana

Twin Bridges is one of those communities that's hard to fully appreciate until you've spent some time here. Located where the Big Hole, Beaverhead, and Ruby Rivers come together to form the Jefferson River, it's surrounded by some of Southwest Montana's best fishing, recreation, and agricultural land. But what stands out most to me isn't the scenery. It's the people.

With a population of around 400, Twin Bridges is a place where relationships matter. People know one another, support local businesses, and show up for community events. That sense of connection is something I hear newcomers mention over and over again after they've settled in.

Twin Bridges Schools

For many families, the school is at the heart of the community, and that's certainly true in Twin Bridges.

Twin Bridges Schools serve students from Pre-K through 12th grade on a single campus and operate on a traditional five-day school week, with an early dismissal on Fridays. Having every grade together creates an environment where students grow up knowing one another. Younger students recognize the high school athletes they cheer for on Friday nights, and older students often become role models for the younger kids coming up behind them.

One of the things I've come to appreciate while substitute teaching is how familiar everyone is with one another. Teachers know their students well, staff members are invested in helping children succeed, and there's a level of interaction across grade levels that isn't always possible in larger districts.

Like many rural Montana schools, students have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities throughout the year. Athletics are an important part of school life, but they're far from the only opportunity available. Students can also participate in organizations like FFA, BPA, 4-H, Speech and Debate, music, student leadership, robotics, and other extracurricular activities. Because of the school's size, many students are able to explore several different interests instead of specializing in just one.

Outside of the school day, youth programs begin early. From Little Dribblers basketball and youth baseball and softball to wrestling, volleyball, football camps, and summer recreation programs, there are opportunities for kids to stay active and involved throughout the year.

Healthcare and Childcare

Although Twin Bridges is a small rural community, families still have access to many of the services they rely on every day.

The newly constructed Twin Bridges Clinic provides local healthcare, with additional medical services available through Ruby Valley Medical Center and larger regional providers in Dillon, Butte, Bozeman, and Helena.

For working families, Kid Country Daycare plays an important role in the community by providing licensed childcare and early learning opportunities. Through my involvement on the board, I've seen firsthand how committed the staff and community are to supporting local families.

Community Life

One of the things I appreciate most about Twin Bridges is that people genuinely enjoy being involved.

Throughout the year, the community comes together for events like the Christmas Stroll, the annual Flotilla, youth sports tournaments, the Madison County Fair, and local fundraisers. It's common to see the same families volunteering at baseball games, helping with school events, and supporting organizations throughout the valley.

The town itself offers many of the everyday conveniences families need, including a grocery store, public library, restaurants, churches, a community & senior center, and local businesses that continue to serve both residents and visitors.

Outdoor recreation is simply part of daily life here. Riverside Park, Jensen Park, the kids fishing pond, walking paths, nearby rivers, and endless opportunities for hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing give families plenty of ways to spend time together outdoors. Kids often grow up with an appreciation for Montana's landscape simply because it's part of their everyday routine.

Location

While Twin Bridges offers the quiet pace of a rural community, it also provides convenient access to several larger towns. Dillon, Whitehall, Butte, Bozeman, and Helena are all within a reasonable drive, making it possible to enjoy small-town living while still having access to expanded shopping, healthcare, higher education, and other regional services.

For many families, that's part of Twin Bridges' appeal. It offers a close-knit community and a slower pace of life without feeling completely removed from everything else.

Living and Raising a Family in Sheridan, Montana

Sheridan is one of the larger communities in the Ruby Valley and has long been a place where families choose to put down roots. It has its own personality and serves as a hub for many of the surrounding communities. Families are often drawn to Sheridan for its schools, local businesses, healthcare services, and the balance it offers between small-town living and everyday convenience. Like Twin Bridges, Sheridan is a place where community involvement is part of everyday life. 

Sheridan Schools

Sheridan Schools serve students from Pre-K through 12th grade and operate on a four-day school week, Monday through Thursday. For many families, that schedule is one of the school's biggest advantages. Fridays often become an opportunity for travel, family time, appointments, agricultural projects, or simply enjoying everything the area has to offer.

Students have access to a wide variety of extracurricular activities throughout the school year, including athletics, FFA, 4-H, Speech and Debate, student leadership, music, and academic clubs. Like many smaller schools, students often have the opportunity to participate in several different activities rather than choosing just one.

Sheridan also offers additional support for working families through programs like PALS (Panther After School Learning Services), which provides after-school care and summer programming for local students.

Healthcare, Childcare, and Everyday Amenities

As one of the larger communities in the Ruby Valley, Sheridan offers many of the services families rely on day to day.

Ruby Valley Medical Center provides healthcare close to home, and families also have access to dental care, pharmacies, childcare, assisted living, and senior services within the community. For many residents throughout the valley, Sheridan serves as the place where errands, appointments, and everyday needs can all be taken care of in one trip.

Downtown Sheridan continues to be one of my favorite parts of the community. Local restaurants, shops, bakeries, the brewery, grocery store, hardware store, library, and other small businesses give the town a welcoming feel while continuing to support the local economy. It's the kind of downtown where you're just as likely to run into someone you know as you are to meet someone new.

Parks, Recreation, and Community Events

Life in Sheridan extends well beyond the school day.

Sheridan City Park has become an even greater gathering place in recent years with improvements to the playground, pavilion, baseball fields, and walking paths along Wisconsin Creek. During the summer, the Ruby Valley Swimming Pool is a favorite destination for local families, while nearby public lands provide endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, ATV riding, and exploring Southwest Montana.

Community traditions also play an important role throughout the year. Events like Sheridan Days, the Christmas Stroll, youth sports tournaments, local fundraisers, and seasonal celebrations continue to bring residents together and give newcomers an easy way to become part of the community.

Location

Sheridan's location is another reason many families choose to live here. It's centrally located within the Ruby Valley and offers convenient access to Twin Bridges, Virginia City, Ennis, Dillon, and Butte. Whether you're commuting for work, heading into the mountains for the weekend, or simply exploring Southwest Montana, Sheridan provides a great home base.

Is the Ruby Valley a Good Place to Raise a Family?

It's a question I'm asked often, especially by families considering a move to Southwest Montana.

My answer is yes, but probably not for the reasons people expect.

The Ruby Valley isn't the right fit for everyone. Rural living means longer drives, fewer conveniences than you'll find in larger cities, and a lifestyle that's a little different than what some people are used to. But for many families, those tradeoffs are exactly what they're looking for.

What makes this area special isn't just the mountain views or the endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. It's the people.

It's the teachers who know their students beyond the classroom. It's the coaches who volunteer countless hours because they care about helping kids grow. It's neighbors checking in on one another, local businesses supporting youth programs, and communities that continue to invest in the next generation.

As both a real estate broker and a parent, I've had the opportunity to experience these communities from several different perspectives. I've watched my own children grow here, met families relocating from across the state and country, and spent time in the classrooms through substitute teaching. Those experiences have only reinforced what I already believed: Twin Bridges and Sheridan are communities where children are encouraged to get involved, try new things, and build lasting relationships.

Every family is different, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing where to live. My goal is never to convince someone that the Ruby Valley is the right place for them.
